Give a Million

Help us get 1 million books to kids in need this holiday season.

This Holiday Season, the Gift of a Book Can Change a Life

For many children, the book you give could be their only holiday gift—and possibly the first book they’ve ever owned. Books have the power to ignite a lifelong love of reading and learning, opening doors to brighter futures. Will you share your love of books and make a meaningful difference this holiday season?

Why Give Now?

1. Your Impact Doubles

This year, your generosity goes even further thanks to our incredible partners:

  • Pizza Hut will double every dollar you donate up to $100,000 through December 31st.
  • The Guru Krupa Foundation will double every dollar you donate up to $10,000 through December 31st.
  • Mary Pope Osborne will double every dollar you donate up to $50,000 through December 31st.

Your gift has twice the power to bring books and joy to kids who need them most.

2. Representation Matters: Diverse Books for Every Child

Representation in books is essential for children to see themselves in the stories they read, fostering self-esteem and a sense of belonging. Equally important, diverse books help children learn about other cultures, experiences, and perspectives—building empathy and understanding.

Yet, the statistics tell us how far we have to go:

  • Only 14.2% of children’s books published in 2022 featured the Black community.
  • Just 10.7% highlighted the Asian community.
  • Only 6.9% featured the Latine community.
  • A mere 1.7% represented Indigenous peoples.
  • Only 0.4% were about the Pacific Islander community.
  • Just 0.7% were about the Arab community.

Children in low-income communities face even greater barriers, with limited access to books that reflect their identities or introduce them to the rich diversity of the world. You can help get more books to kids in need by supporting First Book.

First Book has the diversity I was totally lacking—not only racial but ethnic, religious, and geographic. It’s hard to find these books by yourself all the time.

Josie, First Book Educator

For many kids, it will be the first book they have ever owned or the only gift they will receive during the holidays. The sense of self-esteem that comes, and the fact that it also furthers their academic possibilities, make the gift of a book invaluable.

The book you send may be the only holiday gift a child gets, and helping a child love books makes a lasting difference. Give by December 31 to double your impact through a Matching Challenge Fund from our generous friends at Pizza Hut — twice as many books with a single gift!"
