Our 3rd Annual Give a Million Holiday Fundraising Campaign
This holiday season, we want to give 1 million new, high-quality books to children in need. 2021 marks our third year of Give a Million, which is our end-of-year fundraising initiative that runs through December 31. We set an ambitious goal culminating in the gift of a new, high-quality book to 1 million children living in poverty to take home this holiday season. In the United States, more than 60 percent of low-income families have no children’s books in their home.
The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted classroom learning, exacerbating socioeconomic disparities across the country, straining school budgets and resources, and amplifying mental and emotional health challenges for students. As educators face continued challenges relating to the pandemic, their top funding priority is investing in books, with an overwhelming 99% of educators in the First Book Network prioritizing books for the students they serve in their own classroom or program.
This holiday season First Book will continue a tradition of answering educators’ holiday book wishes and distributing books that children can take home to cherish, starting or adding to a home library for the whole family. Starting November 15, donations will be maximized on First Book match days. On selected days, including December 15-16 as well as Giving Tuesday and more, First Book partners are doubling the impact of donations.
Award-winning author Mo Willems and his wife Cher have issued a $50,000 match challenge for Giving Tuesday. For every $1 raised, they will match it up to $50,000.
Please join the Mo and Cher Willems Foundation in supporting First Book this Giving Tuesday – and double the number of books gifted to kids in need this holiday season. Hurry though, the match challenge ends midnight, November 30.
Alane knows how valuable educators are, and she doesn’t think they hear that enough. This last year has been particularly tough being thrust into remote teaching with little to no guidance or support, and yet teachers rose magnificently to do their best and give their students everything they had to keep them going.
She donates to First Book because her mission is closely aligned with First Book’s — getting books in the hands of underserved kids. She can’t think of a more worthwhile organization doing valuable work to create real change in the lives of underserved children. Read the full donor spotlight here.
Why Your Donation Matters
We believe every child should have equal access to quality education.
For nearly 30 years, fueled by generous donations from hundreds of thousands of supporters, First Book has made a direct impact on the lives of millions of children in need.
Today, we serve 1 out of every 3 classrooms or programs with low-income students. But we don’t do it alone. First Book’s network of educators is the largest of its kind. Over 525,000 classroom teachers, summer and early childhood program staff, librarians, community advocates, care providers, and more – all working together to build a more promising future for children and families in need.
Since 1992, First Book has distributed more than 200 million books and educational resources to programs and schools serving children from low-income communities in all 50 states and provinces in Canada.
Your donation is used to provide brand new, age-appropriate books to families who have none. Your support is used to provide educators with entire classroom libraries filled with books and resources. Your gift helps outfit school libraries, helps provide basic hygiene products and other essential items necessary to educational equity. Most importantly, your generosity bestows a love of reading, the fuel for the imagination, and the ability for families to bond together.
Your donation matters. It matters to millions of families every year.
From our family to yours – thank you.
