Since 2021, First Book and General Motors (GM) have built a dynamic partnership focused on expanding access to STEAM resources and opportunities for the First Book Network. United by a shared commitment to making sure all kids have access to STEAM resources, this collaboration aims to provide a greater variety of STEAM books for young readers, showcasing characters that reflect a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. We also engage GM employees to share their unique STEAM journeys with students across the U.S. Together, we’re inspiring the next generation of innovators and leaders. This partnership strengthens our collective effort to foster opportunity in STEAM education for all.

STEAM Book Family Festivals: Inspiring the Next Generation of STEAM Leaders

First Book and General Motors host STEAM Book Family Festivals to bring STEAM education to underserved communities. These interactive events feature hands-on activities and book giveaways. These festivals are a key part of our mission to inspire curiosity, promote diversity, and equip students with the tools they need to succeed in STEAM.

Innovative STEAM Resources for Educators

First Book provides our Network of educators with free resources to help build the skills necessary for STEAM success. These resources are designed to help children engage with STEAM in meaningful ways, fostering both technical and soft skills.

STEM Defines Our Future: Soft Skills and STEM Success

First Book developed a series of videos that explore various STEM fields, such as design, engineering, and manufacturing. These videos highlight the importance of nontechnical soft skills—like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving—in achieving success in STEM careers.

STEAM Careers All Year Virtual Event Series

The STEAM Careers All Year virtual event series offer children a unique opportunity to engage with real-life STEAM professionals. These events connect kids with scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and other experts working at GM. During these interactive sessions, professionals share their personal STEAM journeys, answer questions, and perform read alouds.

Literacy is foundational to the academic and professional success of all students and fostering an interest and pursuit of STEM careers begins with a mastery of reading skills. Bolstering home libraries with STEM focused books and cultivating a love of reading at an early age is a vital step to increase representation of historically excluded communities in STEM.

Heidi Magyar, Executive Director of Corporate Giving at General Motors

I thought I knew what I wanted to do when I graduated high school. Now, I’m considering things that hadn’t thought about before because of your class and the STEM professional talks and career research. You’ve opened my eyes and now I want to learn more.

They are the boots-on-the-ground experts in the communities that they’re serving. Working together to align where their team holds and where the resources perhaps might be needed, along with how we marry that with our company’s mission, really helps us to create that successful long-term strategic partnership.
