First Book & Pizza Hut: Empowering Educators

First Book and Pizza Hut present Empowering Educators

A series of free resources designed to support educators in helping their students engage in effective, courageous conversations about race and social justice. Created in response to educator needs uncovered by First Book’s Research & Insights, the Empowering Educators series includes a guidebook, instructional videos, and other pedagogic resources informed by leading anti-bias and antiracism experts: Britt Hawthorne, Tiffany Jewell, Liz Kleinrock, Cornelius Minor, Catherine Wigginton Greene, and Christine Platt.

First Book Research & Insights
In a 2019 survey conducted of educators registered with First Book, most said they were moderately knowledgeable and somewhat comfortable talking about race. However, a total of 66 percent said they would like to more proactively engage their students in conversations about race. These resources were created to help educators do that.
The Empowering Educators Guidebook
The 50-page Guidebook includes answers to the most common questions asked by First Book members in our 2019 survey on how to discuss race and racism with students. Also included is an Appendix with additional resources and recommended reading from contributing subject matter experts.

Empowering Educators Video Series
Part I of the Empowering Educators video series includes conversations with our subject matter experts, with recommendations and encouragement for how teachers can incorporate antiracist pedagogy.

A Convening on Racial Equity in Education
Presented in partnership with American University's Antiracist Research and Policy Center (ARPC) and Pizza Hut, this live webcast reached over 7,000 educators globally to provide valuable insights and support for educators looking to have effective and courageous conversations on race and social justice in the classroom.
Making More Diverse and Inclusive Titles Accessible
As a companion to the Empowering Educators Collection, Pizza Hut and First Book have selected five of the most popular diverse titles on the First Book Marketplace and re-issued them in first-ever, affordable paperback editions. The paperbacks selected for the inaugural launch are warm, affirming picture books that explore meaningful elements of identity that will be relatable to all readers. Pizza Hut selected these titles from First Book’s Stories for All Project™, which curates new, relevant, high-quality books representing diverse characters, voices, and life circumstances and makes them available and affordable to educators who support kids in need.
“From the neighborhood to the national level, America is on a critical journey:  from identifying racism, to deeper understanding – and finally to dismantling systemic racism. To support this journey, First Book is honored to partner with Pizza Hut to launch an unprecedented effort to empower educators – and the children they serve.  These resources, and the important conversations they enable, will inspire and enlighten all of us as we work together with our educators to elevate equal opportunities for all of our children.”
